As part of a wide-ranging effort to address the need for affordable community housing, the East Hampton Town Board is reviewing the town law that allows homeowners to create affordable accessory apartments, discussing changes that could result in more available apartments while continuing to protect neighborhoods.
On the state level, Assemblyman Fred Thiele has introduced the Accessory Dwelling Unit Incentive Act, which could provide an income tax credit and a real property tax exemption for property owners who rent legal affordable apartments, as well as establish a state loan and grant program for apartment construction.
Review the latest draft revised town law, to be discussed at a Town Board work session on Feb. 7, beginning at 11 a.m. : https://ehamptonny.gov/DocumentCenter/View/16289/Draft-Amendments-Chp-255---Affordable-Accessory-Apartments. The session can be viewed live, or as recorded, on LTVeh.org.
